Track record

Tested on every crisis since 2007.

We ran the method on every business day since 2007, using only data that had been published by that day, and checked it against 31 stress events. Here is everything: what it caught, what it missed and why, and how we tested it for hindsight.

24 of 31stress events met or preceded by a Caution or Alert reading.
16 of 19events caught in the out-of-sample test, 2017–2026.
6%of days at Alert since 2007.

What the misses tell you

Some crises start as surprises. A covert invasion or a surprise attack leaves no public trace beforehand, and no service can warn before it. What matters then is hearing the same day what it means and whether it is spreading: in each case here, the reading followed within days.

Some shocks are not crises. A 12-minute trading glitch or a market's reaction to one speech can look dramatic and fade within hours or weeks. Staying calm through them is the point: a service that alerts on every blip is noise.

Some blind spots are known. Shocks to single companies need company-level data, which we will add. We would rather show you the gaps than hide them.

No method sees a surprise coming. Ravenmaster sees most crises building, tells you the same day when one starts, and stays quiet when nothing is wrong.

How we tested it

Built to be hard to fool.

  1. Only data published at the time. Each day's reading uses only figures that had been published by that day, never later revisions or knowledge of what came next.
  2. Every event listed. We test 31 stress events since 2007 and list every one, including the misses and those caught only after they began.
  3. A check for hindsight. A method designed after the fact can flatter itself, so we also ran one with thresholds locked on older data (below).

About these results. They are hypothetical: no reports were sent on these dates. The method was designed in 2026, with knowledge of these events, and a method tuned on past crises tends to look better on them than it will on the next one. Past readings do not guarantee future ones, and no method catches every crisis.

Out-of-sample check. To test for hindsight, we set every threshold by one fixed rule using only 2007–2016 data, locked them, and ran the method on 2017–2026, which the rule never saw. It still showed Caution or Alert in the 30 days before 16 of the 19 events of that period. Caution is common under that rule, about a quarter of days, so a random day has one in the 30 days before about half the time; 16 of 19 by chance would happen less than 1% of the time. Alert is rare, about 2% of days, and 10 of the 19 events reached it. We chose the events, and nineteen is still a small sample.

The method
  1. 44 market indicators in 10 areas, plus 13 background series, from the Federal Reserve, the US Treasury, the FDIC, the ECB, the Bank of England and other public sources.
  2. 81 official and news sources, from central banks and regulators to SEC filings, geopolitics, cybersecurity, shipping and space weather.
  3. The overall level moves only when stress is confirmed, and reaches Alert only when it is broad.
  4. Full method and source list.
